Speech and Debate takes over Grapevine

While most of the Jaguars were cheering on their football team during Southwest Showdown on September 6, seven Speech and Debate members were on their way to Grapevine Texas to their first tournament of the season, The Grapevine Classic.

The state winning team worked tirelessly over the summer participating in camps and workshops to help prepare for the upcoming season and to maintain their state champions title.

“During the summer, I kept up with the news and stayed in touch with team members to prepare for the tournament,” Junior Cameron S. said.

100 teams from over 11 other states entered the Grapevine Texas tournament. Out of the seven students who represented Westmoore four placed in the finals: sophomore Cecelia A., in Info, senior Seth K., in International Exploratory, junior Weston T., in Humorous Interpretation, and Savannah F., in Pros.

This is just the beginning for the season, the team has begun practicing three times in preparation for the sixteen tournaments that they are planning on competing in.

On September 28-29th the team will travel to Jenks, OK for the second tournament of the year.  More students are expected to compete at this tournament than at Grapevine.  Debaters will compete on the 28th and if they advance into finals they will compete on the 29th, speaking events will only compete on the 29th.
