CODE BLUE! CODE BLUE!

There are many different types of nurses. Examples of nurses are respiratory, endoscopy, ER ( emergency room), and a RN ( registered nurse). The one covered in this story is an endoscopy nurse.

First, let’s get to know what endoscopy is. The definition of Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure that examines the patient’s digestive system. This uses an endoscope and a tube with a light and camera attached to it. The reasoning of endoscopy is to make sure you don’t have cancer in your colon. The normal age that this would take place is around 50 years old. If they see the start of or any cancer they send the patient to an oncologist or someone who treats cancer.

An endoscopy nurse can take many positions. They could have pre-op, intra, post-op tech, and charge. Pre-op prepares the patient before the procedure. Intra is when the nurse is in the room while the procedure is taking place. Post-op is when the nurse takes care of the patient after the procedure and gets them ready to be released.A tech assists the physicians in the procedure. The charge seems to be one of the easiest jobs. Being the charge nurse means you get to be in charge of the nurses for the day, making sure everyone and everything is working. My mom is in this field, let me tell you her story.

When asked what her normal day looks like, endoscopy nurse, LeEtte G . answered  “I arrive at work at 6:30 a.m. I then pull medicine and water out for the tech. After, I open up the anesthesia cart. I pre-chart, checking allergies, vitals, procedures, and medical patients take at home. I talk to the patient and confirm their name, allergies, and medication they take. After confirming their information, I take them to their procedure room and make sure the oxygen is entering their nose. I also hook them up to the vital machine. I position the patient. The team performs a timeout where we go over the information with the doctor before the procedure. The doctor performs the procedure while I document. I then release patient of vitals and take to post-op room. I take care of any specimens. I give a report to the post-op nurse. I then take the next patient and repeat until the list is gone. At the end, I take or send calls to confirm appointments. But, that is just Intra.”

Endoscopy nurses can get called into work at any point during the day. Being on call means from the time you go into work the day you’re on called till you go into work the next day at 7:00 am. You can get called in in the middle of the night when you are sleeping.

Now, you don’t always have to be serious. “Doctor Ali had on futuristic kiddy glasses, he came in bouncing like Tigger pretending to take our picture,” said LeEtte. An endoscopy nurse makes around $67,000 a year.

A RN goes through four years of college before going into the field. Moore-Norman Vocational Center offers a Medical Assisting program for high school students that can lead to a nursing career.
