As the weather changes, the allergies and sicknesses begin to rise. Whether it’s a running nose, sore throat or a cough, everyone is being affected.

“I’ve had a cough for over a month now and it’s awful.” senior Tristen K. said, “I’ll laugh at a joke and then instantly start coughing.”

People seem to most likely come down with a cold or flu when the seasons change. Although these dramatic temperature changes aren’t really the actual causes of these illnesses according to the experts.

When the temperature shifts a different group of viruses begins to flourish, and it’s those viruses that make people sick, according to an internal medicine physician at Orlando Health in Florida, Dr. Benjamin Kaplan.

“When the weather changes from like fall to winter, I always get sick, it’s usually not anything serious. I just have a slight cough and a runny nose.” junior Nicole B. said.

There are many sicknesses going around at this time, but the most common one is the flu. The flu is a respiratory illness that can be served without proper treatment. The most common flu symptoms are: fever/chills, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, muscle/body aches, headaches, fatigue, and for small children they could also have vomiting/diarrhea.

If you’re concerned about getting the flu, you can go to the Oklahoma State Department Of Health and get a free flu shot this season, according to the OuDaily. If you’re not wanting to go to the OSDH, you can go to almost any “minute clinic” or walk-in pharmacy and get a flu shot.

“I’ve gotten a flu shot almost every year and I’ve never had the flu, but the one time I didn’t get a flu shot, I got the flu. So the lesson is, get a flu shot.” senior Gracie F. said.

The change in weather is getting to everyone, one way or another. So to help stop the spread of illnesses: cover your coughs, don’t share drinks, food, etc., wash your hands/carry hand sanitizer, and get a flu shot(if you would like).
