MOORE – Starting November 17, 2018, Moore Public Schools (MPS) temporarily shut down access to computers at all of their sites, including the schools. Most of the computers were back up and running after Thanksgiving Break. However, the thing puzzling everyone was the source of the whole shutdown– what was it?

“I was confused because [the computers are] the main sources for one of my classes. I heard it was due to an email, like a spam chain,” freshman Sarah D. said, “I didn’t really know what was going on. One principal even said we were gonna close down the school.”

Rumors circulated inside the classrooms and outside of them. Students, at one point, believed it was the meddling of kids attending Southmoore High School. Others thought it was an email that infected the entire United States, not just the school district. It was clear, though, that teachers were just as unsure as the students.

“I heard someone implanted a virus at the headquarters,” sophomore Cecilia A. said, “Teachers didn’t seem to know what was going on. They were just as confused as students.”

To put the rumors to rest, MPS Director of Technology Jun Kim established that the origin was a computer virus that infected Moore Public Schools, not as a specific target though. It was due to an individual opening a malicious email on their device.

“We identified a computer virus,” Kim said, “and as a precaution, we shut down internal and external connectivity to isolate and resolve.”

Sources claim that if you were logged into your MPS account on your personal device, it was at risk of the virus. Director Kim cannot verify that at this time. Another claim was when connecting phones to school computers, MPS has the “potential” to see everything on that device. Although this may be true, Kim says they do not monitor them since most students just want to charge their phones.

“I think everyone would be scared to connect their phones after this incident,” freshman Laura N. said, “because they have a lot of private information that they don’t want others to see.”

Life at Westmoore High School has certainly changed without the use of computers and wifi. Teachers claimed they interacted more with their students. Technology-based classes, such as Publications and Computer Education, had to improvise. Regardless, the storm has passed and the shine of computer screens have returned.
